Just want to scream!

I “thought” we were doing an OK job with our kids. They earn their own money for the things they want. However, they don’t have to pay for their baseball team or other extra curricular activities. If they want a new baseball glove and the one they have is fine, it is just from last year, then YES, it will be their money. If Buddy wants to add car number 5,443 to his already LARGE collection of Hot Wheels cars, then YES, it will be his money.

So far if we want to go to a movie, parents pay. If we go out to eat, parents pay. If we go on vacation and it is a place we may never go to again, we will give the kids X amount of money for them to choose what souvenir they would like. However, if what they want is more than the amount we are “giving” them, the extra will come out of their allowance or money earned.

As you know from this post ,Bug is saving money for a Ipod Nano. There have been things in the last few weeks that she has REALLY wanted and they have been cheap because Target has had some nice clearance. But, she won’t use her own money because she is saving for her Ipod Nano. She must understand the concept somewhat of choosing the items you spend your hard earned money on! We haven’t purchased them for her either, so she is going without the smaller items while waiting to earn enough for large item.

I am sure you wondering by now why I would like to scream…here you go.

So last night the kids were able to pick out a DVD from our collection to watch. Buddy chose the Disney Channel Christmas DVD that we have which has shows like Hannah Montana and Suite Life of Zack and Cody. They were allowed to chose one episode to watch since this dvd has about 7 different episodes, all of which I wasn’t about to watch.

Bug says “We don’t have cable anymore because Daddy doesn’t make enough money.” If that wasn’t bad enough she says it in the most snotty voice I have EVER heard come out of her mouth! I just want to SCREAM!!

Now, for the record, we chose to cut cable! We don’t watch TV, and when we do watch it, it is CBS and NBC. If we had Disney Channel, that is ALL the kids would want to do. What kind of exciting pictures would I have on here if it was always the kids in front of the TV?!

How do I explain this to her? It isn’t just about money, it is WHAT we want our money spent on! I don’t need to pay for something we aren’t using! Just like I wouldn’t pay for something I don’t believe in. Or I wouldn’t want to pay for a service I didn’t receive.

The attitude is what really gets me. Just makes me want to SCREAM!!!

Not sure what to say. I think Money is a really hard concept.

I think I would just point out that just as she is saving her money for something she really wants, and passing up others, you are doing the same with cable.

And…..TV is NOT a priority in your home, so you refuse to spend BIG money on it.

Thank you, Corey! Teaching priorities sucks! I know we live in the age of “I want it NOW” and it sucks waiting!!

I had her write all things she doesn’t have, then all the things she DOES have. But I am not sure she really gets it…sigh…
